The Life and Legacy of Larry Jennings

Larry Jennings was born on September 11, 1933, in Los Angeles, California, and he passed away on October 12, 1997. In his lifetime, he left an indelible mark on the world of magic, particularly in the domain of card magic. His journey as a magician was not just a career; it was a lifelong passion that brought him worldwide recognition and admiration.

Larry Jennings' magic journey began at the tender age of 13 when he discovered a fascination for magic through a local magic shop. This initial spark ignited a lifelong passion that led him to become one of the most respected figures in the world of close-up magic. He became not only a performer but also a teacher, passing on his knowledge and expertise to generations of magicians.

The Master of Card Magic

Larry Jennings had an unwavering love for card magic, and he dedicated his life to perfecting it. His work with playing cards was nothing short of extraordinary. His sleight of hand skills were impeccable, and he had a deep understanding of the psychology behind the magic. His contributions to card magic were ground-breaking and continue to influence magicians to this day.

One of Larry Jennings' most notable creations was the "Larry Jennings' Multiple Selection Routine." This routine involved having multiple cards selected from a deck and then astonishingly producing the selected cards from various parts of the deck. The routine showcased not only his technical skill but also his ability to engage and entertain an audience. It's a routine that many magicians aspire to perform, and it remains a testament to his genius.

In addition to his routines, Jennings authored several influential books on card magic. One of his most acclaimed works is "The Classic Magic of Larry Jennings," which compiles his most renowned effects and techniques. This book has become a staple in the library of any serious card magician. It's a treasure trove of knowledge that reveals the inner workings of his magic and the brilliance of his thinking. As mentioned previously, this is also available as a DVD/Download and I highly recommend it!

The Jennings Double Lift

Among Larry Jennings' contributions to card magic, the "Jennings Double Lift" stands out as a hallmark of his expertise. The double lift is a fundamental move in card magic, and Jennings' version of it is renowned for its subtlety and naturalness. It's a move that allows a magician to convincingly show the top card of the deck as something other than it actually is, a crucial element in countless card tricks.

What makes Jennings' Double Lift so remarkable is the finesse with which he executed it. His handling made it almost invisible, and he had an uncanny ability to make even the most sceptical spectator believe in the magic they were witnessing. The Jennings Double Lift has become a foundation for many card magicians and an essential tool in their repertoire. This is the only double lift that I use, it's a little nacky, but once you have mastered it, it's imperceptible.

Influence on the Magic Community

Larry Jennings was not only a magician but also a mentor to many aspiring magicians. His willingness to share his knowledge and teach his craft earned him the respect and admiration of countless individuals in the magic community. He was not secretive about his techniques; instead, he actively encouraged others to learn and improve.

One of the ways he shared his expertise was through his lectures. Larry Jennings travelled the world, delivering lectures on card magic and sleight of hand. His lectures were known for their clarity, precision, and the invaluable insights he offered to fellow magicians. These lectures left a profound impact on those who attended, and his teaching style was often cited as an inspiration for many magicians to refine their own presentation skills.

The Magic of Larry Jennings

Larry Jennings' magic was characterized by its elegance and simplicity. He had an extraordinary ability to take simple techniques and elevate them to a level of artistry. His performances were a masterclass in timing, misdirection, and audience engagement.

One of his signature effects was the "Invisible Palm Aces." In this routine, he would make four aces vanish one by one, seemingly into thin air, and then produce them again in a spectacular manner. The simplicity of the effect made it all the more baffling, and it became one of his most iconic tricks.

Another notable contribution was his work on the "Zarrow Shuffle," a false shuffle that maintains the order of the deck. The finesse with which he executed the Zarrow Shuffle was remarkable, and it has become a staple move for card magicians looking to maintain the order of a deck while creating the illusion of shuffling. This technique is a testament to his commitment to perfecting even the smallest details of a magic routine.

The Jennings Experience
